Getting to yes
We want to say yes to you! Our success depends on how astute we are at finding new talent and representing you to an industry that is notoriously difficult to break into.

You can help us make the right decision by sending us a complete, well written query. We are different in that we prefer to accept email queries, but we are the same as other agencies and publishers in that there are certain things that we look for in unsolicited queries.

To help you submit a complete query we recommend the following articles to your attention:
"Secrets to a Great Book Query Letter" by Sheryl Fullerton and Naomi Lucks
"DOS and DON'TS: How To Write The Perfect Query Letter" by Gail Eastwood

Understand that we get a lot of  queries, but we take the time to consider each of them. Your query is your first, and possibly the only, chance to impress us with your skills and with the quality of your submission.

You should spend as much time crafting your query as you do  your manuscript.  Misspellings, gross misuse of the language or sloppy presentation will doom your effort to obtain representation. We also will not go to a website for additional information--that is what your query is for.

At this time we will NOT consider:
  • Previously published work—no e-books, self published or print on demand.
  • Juvenile, Young Adult or children’s stories.
  • Plays or scripts
  • Poetry
Nothing longer than 80,000 - 120,000 words---Use the word count obtained by this method
Nothing shorter than 70,000 words.  Go to how to count.

In fiction we will consider:  Thrillers, mysteries, action, adventure, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, horror, literary, mainstream.

In nonfiction, we are always looking for:  good how-to and Do It Yourself books, memoirs, self-help, creative nonfiction, prescriptive nonfiction and narrative nonfiction.

Nonfiction is always welcome—preference given to books whose authors have credentials.
You will need a proposal for nonfiction,

These are hard and fast rules for consideration within our agency.  It changes from time-to-time when the market changes so check back frequently.

We know how hard it is to get started in this business, and we know you want to send your query to multiple agencies, simulataneuosly.  And that is fine with us. But if we ask to see your manuscript, we would like that to be an exclusive look.

When will you hear from us? In general, an answer to your query should come within  two weeks.  If we ask to see a partial, that should also take 2 - 4 weeks, and a full manuscript 4 to 6 weeks. We all work very hard and we're all doing the best we can, so we ask for your patience with this process.
.
When your query is completed and you are satisfied that it is the best presentation you can make, send your fiction query to Query@AgentR.com. Send your nonfiction query to Rebecca@AgentR.com. Send it within your email, not as an attachment to an email--we DO NOT open unsolicited email attachments.

We look forward to hearing from you.
