Thomas L. Leaman, M.D.

Thomas L. Leaman, MD began practicing family medicine in the small town of Hershey, Pennsylvania forty years ago.  When Pennsylvania State University opened the MS Hershey Medical Center there in 1967, he joined the faculty and established the first department of family medicine in the United States.  While professor and chair of that department, he continued his family practice.

A strong proponent for the specialty of family medicine, he has been much honored by his peers.  He was one of the founders of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Association of the Departments of Family Medicine, and was elected to the presidency of both.  He has served on the editorial boards of three national publications.

Dr. Leaman is a recognized authority in the field of anxiety diseases and has made numerous presentations.  He moderated an interactive satellite video conference on educating primary care physicians Thomas L. Leaman, MDabout anxiety disease that was broadcast to 50 cities, reaching 15,000 physicians.  He is the author of many articles on anxiety disease and has served on several editorial boards of professional publications on anxiety disease.

In spite of his many honors and his academic standing, he is first and foremost a family doctor.  Raising his family and practicing medicine in the same town for forty years has given him the unique perspective of someone who knows and cares about families.  In some cases he is the only doctor the families have known.  He knows that any illness impacts the entire family, not just the sufferer.

He lives with his wife, Jeanne, in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
